When babies get a little older and not so insecure it is great to do photographs with just blankets and nothing more as they are quite comfortable and happy!

The current trend for newborn photography is baby without clothes! Here are some tips :)

A sneak peek into yesterday's cute, cute, baby shoot!

We only just got the maternity shoot in before this little fellow decided to make his grand entrance into the world, three and a half weeks early! Well, not so little now, of course! His mummy needed a little time to recover and get into a routine with him and big brother so we delayed the newborn shoot until everyone was relaxed and ready!

Well actually baby wasn't quite ready he decided he needed a feed so we chilled, and chatted while he topped himself up and then we were ready to go! Oh no baby still not ready - in one end - out the other! So after a nappy change which actually baby wasn't that keen on :( we settled him and carried on and he even opened his eyes for us! Thank goodness he did because they are beautiful!

And his lovely mum sent me an email yesterday too

“The photos are lovely and I am really going to struggle as to which ones to choose! I don't usually like photos taken of me but you really put me at ease and I now have lovely photos to treasure :)”

To be or not to be, that is the question and don’t try this at home?

Recently I published a blog regarding a client who had been worried that I was going to take photographs of her newborn baby without clothes on, and she was very relieved when I said that wasn’t what I had in mind!

Since publishing that baby blog, I have been asked lots of questions, one of which is how do they get baby to rest his chin on his hands and take photos because baby’s head just rolls off! Firstly, don’t try that at home! There needs to be two adults involved in this shoot, one to hold baby and one to take photographs! And finally one of you needs to be incredibly good at photoshop!

There are concerns shared by many about the safety of your baby when partaking in these cute little squished up cheeky faced baby photoshoots! The only way of actually getting such a photograph is by someone holding baby’s head, someone else taking the photograph and then knowing exactly what you are doing with editing software and cloning any unwanted hands out of the picture in post-production!

All professional baby photographers, of course, will be able to do that, however, you must realise if you are going for that cute chin in hands kind of shoot, baby should be newborn or under two weeks old. Also, and very important for you to know is that it can take from four hours to a day for that kind of shoot! The reason being is that everyone has to work around baby’s schedule of feeds and nappy changes. Baby has to be fast asleep, very still and almost impossible to disturb with any amount of handling!

We, as baby photographers, and you as parents will be required to give up at least half a day and possibly a whole day for one naked newborn baby shoot. Hence, the price in time and cost of shoot and post-production is much higher!

In short, I will photograph your baby, your way. You can rest assured I will always ensure you are both comfortable throughout the whole experience. And the minute your baby looks disturbed I stop shooting!

When I stepped inside the door of this client's home I informed them that I don't normally do naked baby photos and before I went on to say but I would if they wanted them, the lady said 'oh thank goodness for that, my mum and I were talking about it and were hoping that you didn't!"

I will explain! You see it's like this. Call me old fashioned but I am a mum of four and a nana and can't bear to see little newborn babies without clothes, mainly because I think they must feel insecure. After having spent the best part of nine months in mum's tummy all neat and cosy, the last thing they need is to be unravelled, legs and arms all over the place and as my client said 'I don't think my little girl will be best impressed with a large photograph on the wall of her naked self!' She certainly has a point!

Now just how would these shots be any better with a naked baby? Very happy client, very happy baby and very happy photographer!

So there you have it, your baby, your photographs and I will take the pictures you want but please ensure you have plenty of blankets for in between shots and oh, just because I am a doting mum and nana I will bring my own too just in case!

A sneak peek into my latest pregnancy photo session.

This was a lovely maternity shoot! I visited C at her mum's home in Stockbridge. We had never met before and we got on immediately!

It was a very relaxed shoot, where we took some pics in the garden and indoors.

People often relax more in their own environment and maternity photography at home is just a great place to start for memorable photographs.

I will come to you and if you feel like it you can just put your feet up and do nothing but caress that bump! I will click away and capture natural photographs of you and your baby belly.

It is lovely to see Dad's with their newborn baby.

I love these pictures. The one above because it just looks like Dad is going to take his baby girl somewhere safe, away from danger! He looks huge and very protective. I think maybe he will want to lock her up in later years, especially when she puts on short skirts and wants to go clubbing!

And the photograph below, firstly because it is my son and grandson :) but also because it epitomises how young dads are with their babies in these modern times, always there to give a shoulder to cry on or even sleep on!

I just love photographing babies and children and find it very hard to stop taking photographs! It is magical!

It was such a privilege to go back and take photographs of this beautiful mum and newborn baby girl. I took some lovely maternity photographs of Mum and I was really looking forward to returning to take pics of the little baby girl. She was so sweet and perfectly behaved. Mind you I never disturb babies and take photos just wherever they are, with mum or without mum. I work with Mums, dads and babies and never intrude.

Mum and her baby boy

I went to visit a lovely couple on the Isle of Wight for this photoshoot.

Mum wanted to have some photographs of her and baby with skin on skin and it made a lovely photograph.

The little baby boy was 7 weeks old and happy to be without clothes.

However, newborn babies are a little insecure without clothes or swaddle and I am always conscious of this and unless you are completely happy with it I will not suggest you take their clothes off for photographs.

I will take the photographs you want - my newborn baby photography is about you and your baby not about me. Your memories in photographs, your way.

I received a call from a stressed mum! 'Help I haven't got any photos of my twins and they are eight months old!'

She said 'Grandma knitted them lovely little baby cardigans and sadly she has now died and I have no photos of the twins in them!'

'They have nearly outgrown their christening gowns and I have no photos!'

'The time has gone so quickly!'

Being a Mum and a grandma, also two of my grandchildren are twins - I know oh so much how time flies and I also know why it flies - nappies, feeds, nappies, feeds and very little sleep! How can you possibly have time to even think! Oh and even if you can find the camera under those beautiful cuddly baby toys that everyone has kindly sent, how can you possibly have time to use it!

So - Jan to the rescue - I visited them at home in the lovely New Forest - an hour gave us some lovely pics of grandma's knitted cardis, christening outfits, special toys and even a couple of other dresses! One twin crawled (making a beeline for lucky ducky, goes with me everywhere!) the other sat and then after all that changing Mum and Dad played with the twins and we got some oh so beautiful memories!

This is a sneak peak!

Without photography we have just distant memories.

We can't possibly remember everything.
Make sure you have photographs to hand down to future generations. Oh yes, you say, of course we have photographs! Ah, but where are they?

In the drawer on a CD perhaps? On your computer, maybe? Oh, still on your camera! :)

Modern technology changes rapidly - yes, store those pics on your computer or store them in the drawer on a CD but get your favourite images in prints on professional archival paper!

Be sure that future generations will be able to see what their, mums, dads, grandparents looked like and prior to that and most importantly be sure you have something to show the boyfriends and girlfriends (you know the sort of thing, the one where he was sucking his thumb)!!!

Fascinating fact:

A baby's skull bones aren't fused at birth. As your newborn baby's head squeezes into the birth canal, the skull bones overlap each other, allowing your baby's head to decrease in diameter to exit the womb.

This sweet little newborn baby boy was a day old when this picture was taken.

No wonder he is asleep, he must be exhausted. He was almost jet propelled at his birth - coming so fast that Mum and Dad only just got to the hospital in time!
